CHICAGO (WLS) -- Nearly 4,000 illegal guns are now off the streets of Chicago since the beginning of the year.
The Chicago Police Department says it recovers more illegal gun than any other city in the U.S. Superintendent Garry McCarthy praised the department's efforts on Monday, but says more needs to be done.
"We're down 13 murders in compared to last year's 1965 murder rate. But it's progress not success," said Supt. McCarthy. "Illegal firearms lead to violence. Period. I can't say it any other way."
Supt. McCarthy continues to call for stricter gun laws. Last year, the Chicago Police Department seized nearly 7,000 illegal guns.
