Operation Walk Chicago doctors treat Nepal earthquake victims outside Kathmandu

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A local doctor who helped treat Nepal earthquake victims is back in Chicago, sharing stories and pictures from the disaster.

Dr. Victoria Brander, a physical rehabilitation physician at Northshore Orthopaedic Institute, is the co-founder of Operation Walk Chicago, a group that cares for disadvantaged patients around the world. Operation Walk Chicago sent a team of orthopedic specialists to a town outside Kathmandu to help care for the injured.

The group performed about 70 surgeries in a week. They found many patients with untreated orthopedic injuries and directed them to area hospitals for care.

In a video she brought back from Nepal, Dr. Brander is seen explaining how her team found a man on the street who had not sought medical care for what she calls a "lower extremity fracture."

Dr. Brander's colleague, Dr. Scott Cordes, is a trauma surgeon who is still in Nepal.

"I don't have too many words right now. It's just too overwhelming, the exposure to what really did happen. All it does is make us that much more willing to go back to the hospital to do what we can to help out the people," Cordes says in the video.

An earthquake that struck eastern Nepal in April killed more than 8,000 people. A second quake on Tuesday killed at least 65 people and injured nearly 2,000.
