CHICAGO (WLS) -- Alderman Ed Burke's family said his prostate cancer surgery was a success and he looks forward to resuming his regular schedule soon.
The family released a statement saying Ald. Burke is in very good spirits. They also thanked everyone for their thoughts and prayers while he recovers.
Burke underwent the procedure at an undisclosed hospital on Thursday. He addressed reports of his battle with prostate cancer for the first time on Tuesday.
"Several weeks ago during a routine physical, we discovered that my PSA level was elevated. Further tests revealed that, like hundreds of thousands of other men, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer," Burke said. "I trust that you will respect my privacy as I deal with this health issue."
Burke has served the 14th Ward for 45 years, the last 25 as City Council's powerful finance committee chairman.
