Penn elementary school lockdown lifted after shots fired nearby

Parents of students at Penn Elementary picked up their children after a shooting across the street.

CHICAGO -- A North Lawndale elementary school was placed on lockdown briefly Thursday afternoon after a man was shot across the street.



The man, 18, was shot across the street from Penn Elementary School, located near 16th and South Avers, around 3 p.m. Students were kept inside their classrooms while Chicago police went through the building as a precautionary measure for about half an hour.



The children were dismissed around 3:30 p.m.



The victim, whose condition is not known, is not affiliated with the school, officials said.



No one is in custody.
