Boy accidentally shot, killed in Park Manor apartment, police say

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Police believe a Chicago boy was accidentally shot and killed by a relative in a Park Manor apartment Wednesday night.

Relatives said Antwone Price, 11, found a gun outside Wednesday night and brought it into his house in the 7400-block of South St. Lawrence Avenue. They said the gun went off as the boy handed it to his 19-year-old uncle.

"We was told that he had found a gun outside, and his uncle asked to see it, something to that nature, and I guess when he went to grab for it, whatever, the gun went off," said Tony Roby, the victim's cousin.

Price was wounded in the stomach and died at the hospital a short time later, police said.

Police said that his uncle is in custody, but has not been charged with a crime.

Family friend and mentor Jackson Floyd said Antwone was a 6th grader at Gary Comer Middle School who aspired to work as a funeral home director.

"He wanted to be a mortician, from the day I met him," Floyd said.

Employees of the Calahan Funeral Home on S. Halsted said that Price helped with flowers and shadowed the funeral director. Floyd said he dropped the young boy off at the home twice a week.

"He'd be there sometimes all day, nine hours a day. He loved it, he absolutely loved it," said Floyd.

As friends and family prepare to lay Antwone to rest, the young boy with a dream to help others plan funerals will be having one of his own.
