WAUKEGAN, Ill. (WLS) -- A kitten was rescued from a drain pipe by firefighters and animal control officers in Waukegan, Ill.
A resident in the 600-block of Home Avenue called the Waukegan Police Department Animal Control after hearing cries from a drain pipe Monday morning. Responders found the animal had fallen into an open drain pipe in the front yard of a home.
Waukegan Fire Lieutenant Steve Berkman and Firefighter Rob McDonald used a rope to lasso the kitten and lift it safely out of the pipe. The rescue took two hours.
The kitten was taken to Animal Control, where it was checked over and got a bath. Caretakers are calling the kitten "Piper." They said the animal is too young to determine its sex. But he or she appears to be in good condition, officials said. If no one comes forward as the kitten's owner, the animal will be up for adoption.
