It's what he did after the crash, though, that is being remembered.
According to the China Post, Lieutenant Colonel Chuang Pei-yuan was flying one of three jets Tuesday in formation practice for an upcoming aviation show with the Air Force Thunder Tiger team when the midair collision occurred. Chuang died as a result of the crash.
The Ministry of National Defense in China said that Chuang had the chance to eject himself following the crash, but took the time to steer away from residential areas. Because of this act, he was unable to use his parachute to land safely, according to the ministry.
Piero Chen uploaded the video above that matches the events described by the Chinese government. In the description of the video are words of tribute to Chuang.
The other pilot involved in the crash survived and did not suffer serious injuries, according to the China Post. An investigation is underway as to the initial cause of the crash.
