Chopper 7 was over an apparent crime scene in the area of the 200-block of Green Bay Road in Highwood around 5:30 p.m. Crime scene tape could be seen around a home.

Highwood police said officers responded to a call for a well-being check on a "reportedly highly intoxicated suicidal man," Investigators say the caller was a relative, who was not on scene, but relayed to 911 that the man's ex-girlfriend was inside the home with him.

"Upon arrival, officers learned the man had locked himself inside a bathroom," a news release from Highwood police read in part. "The man stated he was armed and said he hoped the officers were wearing their vests. The man then abruptly exited the bathroom armed with a pistol, pointed in the officers' direction, at which time one officer discharged their firearm, striking the man."

The man was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said. He was identified Friday as 58-year-old Richard Garfinkle.

Investigators recovered what appeared to be a "replica pistol."
