Black History Month: Local entrepreneurs selling wellness products

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Two Black-owned businesses are transforming health and wellness from the inside out this Black History Month.

Products that promote health and wellness are more popular than ever. And some local entrepreneurs are turning their passion for self-care into businesses, and helping others along the way.

Inside the L1 retail store in Washington Park, you'll find unique items from Chicago entrepreneurs.

Among the goods are products from Moonstone Chandlery: a company started nine years ago by South Side native Maureen Crichlow, who took inspiration from her own journey.

"I always struggled with anxiety, ever since being a teenager. And I actually started to heal myself," Crichlow said.

Crichlow became a certified Reiki master, incorporating crystals in her private sessions with clients.

"Reiki is a gentle clearing of the chakra system, the energy center working human energetic body," Crichlow said.

She said energy healing can release stress, trauma and emotional blocks.

Crichlow also creates crystal-infused energy tools, like handcrafted candles and smudge sprays.

"The products will meet you where you are and support a specific intention that they are designed to do," Crichlow said.

A different kind of healing is what inspired Shaun Rose to create Natures Dezzert in 2001.

His son, Jahari, had frequent flare-ups of eczema.

"I wanted to make sure he had something outside of all the steroid creams and things like that," Rose said.

So Rose, a professional barber, experimented with shea butter, and found the natural product was just what his son needed.

"It's lighter, easy to apply, not greasy, and the fragrance is long lasting," Rose said.

Natures Dezzert took off, thanks to word of mouth, and a product that delivers.

"A lot of regular people and stars are wearing it. So I just want to keep it going and make sure it gets out in the right hands," Rose said.
