Body found in field in Portage, Indiana: police

PORTAGE, Ind. (WLS) -- Police in northwest Indiana say there is no danger to the public after a body was found in a field on Thursday.

The dead man was discovered in Portage near U.S. Highway 6 and Swanson Road.

Portage police believe they have identified the man and confirm he was not homeless and not a resident of the nearby nursing home.

Police said those were social media rumors that are untrue.

How the man died was not immediately clear, and an investigation is underway.
