WAUKEGAN, Ill. (WLS) -- A nonprofit organization said it has identified remains of a pregnant teenage girl who was living in Waukegan when she disappeared and was killed more than 50 years ago.
The DNA Doe Project said its investigative genetic genealogists identified remains as 15-year-old Cheryl Lynn Edwards, who is originally from San Diego, California.
Fishermen in Clinton County, Iowa found her body in the Mississippi River on April 11, 1975, the nonprofit said.
The teen, formerly known only as Jane Clinton Doe, had been fatally shot in the head, and her death was ruled a homicide, the nonprofit said. An autopsy also found that she was about 10 weeks pregnant at the time of her death, sometime in early 1975.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety brought this case to the DNA Doe Project, which said its genealogists tracked down the teen's relatives and later positively identified her.
