Cops chase fleeing car, exchange gunfire with suspect on SW Side: CPD

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Three suspects are in custody after an exchange of gunfire involving Chicago police early Saturday morning, officials said.

CPD said tactical officers tried to stop a vehicle for an investigation in the Brighton Park neighborhood's 4400-block of South Mozart Street just before 1:15 a.m.

The vehicle's driver fled, and someone inside fired at a CPD vehicle multiple times, police said.

Police said officers chased the vehicle, which crashed in the nearby 2900-block of West 47th Street. Video from the scene shows a crashed car with fencing wrapped around it.

There, the suspects fled on foot, and one of them took out a gun and fired at the officers, police said. One officer discharged their own weapon. No one was shot.

Three suspects, two males and one female of unknown ages, were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries suffered in the crash. One officer was transported to a local hospital for observation.

Officers took the suspects into custody and found two guns on the scene.

CPD's Investigative Response Team was on the scene on Saturday morning.

The officer(s) involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum period of 30 days.
