Semi's load strikes bridge; I-55 shut down in south suburbs, ISP says

HODGKINS, Ill. (WLS) -- The I-55 Stevenson Expressway saw extensive delays on Thursday after a semi's load hit an overpass bridge.

Chopper 7 was over the scene just after 7 a.m. on the northbound lanes of I-55 at La Grange Road.

Illinois State Police said the crash happened at 4:25 a.m.

A semi's load struck the overpass bridge, ISP said.

Video from Chopper 7 shows a type of spill on the expressway.

It was not immediately clear what spilled on the expressway, however Hazmat crews were called.

As of 11:30 a.m. traffic was still only able to get by using the shoulder.

One person was taken to an area hospital with injuries.

No other information was available.
