EVERGREEN PARK, Ill. (WLS) -- A man has been charged in the shooting of two people at an Evergreen Park Walmart on Wednesday night, police said.

Officers found two victims, a 23-year-old man with wounds to the leg and a 70-year-old female bystander who was shot in the foot, police said.

Police said that as the male victim arrived at the store and was walking in, the suspect, 20-year-old Yoseph Barnes of Chicago, got out of the front passenger seat of a vehicle in the parking lot and chased after the victim while shooting a fully loaded black Glock 19 handgun.

The man was shot five times.

Witnesses told police the suspect drove away in a gray Hyundai with two other people, and, after a search, the suspect was taken into custody in the 9300-block of Country Club Drive. He had been hiding in a garbage can.

Those in the car with him were later found on Chicago's South Side.

Police said Barnes has been charged with attempted murder.

He appeared in court Friday, and a Cook County judge called the shooting a horrific act of violence.

Barnes will remain behind bars, pending trial.

Investigators say the attack was witnessed by several shoppers, store security guards and captured by the store's security cameras.

Witnesses say Barnes dropped his gun after getting into a scuffle with the man he'd wounded, before running out of the store through a back fire exit into the neighborhood behind it. The gun was recovered at the scene.

In court, Barnes' defense lawyer told the judge his client lives with his godmother, and has a child on the way. He is currently enrolled in a sanitation program.

Barnes, who is currently on parole, is a convicted felon, who, in 2023, was found guilty of being in possession of a machine gun.

Authorities say the motive for Wednesday's attack was unclear because it doesn't appear Barnes has any connection to the man he targeted.

Despite multiple wounds, the man Barnes is accused of shooting survived the attack and is stable. The other victim was treated and released.

Barnes is due back in court on Nov. 7.
