Two people are now in custody, and police said they recovered two guns at the scene.

The shooting took place at about 4:18 a.m. in the 3700-block of West 67th Place in the city's West Lawn neighborhood.

Police said the off-duty officer was confronted by several armed suspects, and there was an exchange of gunfire.

There was a West Lawn shooting. An off-duty Chicago police officer was injured in a shootout on West 67th Place, CPD says; COPA is investigating.

The suspects drove away in a dark-colored sedan, police said.

The officer was not shot, but suffered a minor injury and was taken to a hospital for observation, police said.

The officer may have been injured by a bullet ricochet.

The initial call was for an attempted car break-in, police said.

Bullet holes and broken glass surround a car on the block. A block west on Hamlin Avenue, another car had broken glass.

Evidence markers were placed on the ground at two different scenes. A backpack was spotted on the ground at the 67th Place scene, and another bag was found two blocks away.

"When I talk to the people, they tell me they hear the shots around 4 in the morning," neighbor Marilu Ochoa said.

Ochoa, who lives nearby, said, when she stepped outside, she noticed multiple parked vehicles were damaged.

"My neighbors, two houses from my house, the white Ford pickup, the windows were broken," Ochoa said.

Neighbors were left trying to understand what led up to the shooting, and who broke into several vehicles.

Some neighbors were awakened by the gunfire.

"I was asleep, and I heard multiple. And then I woke up; it woke me up," neighborhood resident Marlen Diaz said.

Diaz said her father left early for work, and noticed someone a little after 4 a.m.

"He kinda saw someone walking by, and waited until they left. Then, he left in his truck. And then, 10 minutes I would say, it happened," Diaz said.

Another neighbor said, once police arrived, he noticed his car had damage. And some of his belongings were found on the block where the shooting occurred.

He did not want his last name used.

"I hope he's OK. He did the right things, and he should know the majority are behind him," Tony said.

Another neighbor said there has been concern about car break-ins and theft.

He said his car was broken into last year.

"We hear about a lot of break-ins, catalytic converter; we just want to wake up in the morning, make sure everything is still there," West Lawn resident Enrique Ruiz said.

No other injuries were reported.

"People just don't feel safe here anymore; my mother-in-law does feel safer. My brother moved out of the city. We've lived in the city our whole lives," Tony said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the incident. The officer involved will be placed on administrative leave for a minimum of 30 days.
