DES PLAINES, Ill. (WLS) -- A 21-year-old man died after a police-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon in the north suburbs, officials said.
Police asked the public to avoid an area on Touhy Avenue between Des Plaines River Road and Scott Street in Des Plaines.
Des Plaines police officers responded around 2:32 p.m. to a report of a domestic disturbance in the 2000 block of Touhy Avenue. A large police presence could be seen in the area.
A male resident of a home was injured after a shooting involving a Des Plaines police officer, officials said. He was taken to a hospital.
Officials later said late Wednesday evening that the man died at the hospital. He was identified as 21-year-old Ayham Babidi.
Investigators spent hours processing the scene near Touhy Avenue and Scott Street. At least five evidence markers were visible near shell casings outside the home.
Neighbors described a large police presence in the area following the shooting.
"I seen a whole bunch of squad cars and they started taping up. And then while I was here for, like, a half hour later, I heard a lady screaming over there at the house," neighbor Sherry Hernandez said.
Chris Matza, who lives nearby, said he also heard a woman screaming after police blocked off the area.
"I got a little scared to see what's going on. Normally, there's not a whole lot of, you know, this type of police action here," Matza said.
A man who identified himself to Univision as Babidi's father said his son had suffered mental health issues for several years.
"He is a very good guy. I don't know what happened," he said.
Other neighbors said the incident has left them unsettled in what they described as a close-knit neighborhood.
"It's disturbing because it's a very quiet neighborhood. Everyone knows each other. So to hear that there was, you know, violence down the street. Yeah, it was upsetting," neighbor Karen Kramer said.
The Des Plaines Police Department said the Major Case Assistance Team is investigating the shooting and will conduct what police described as an impartial, third-party review.
Police have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
No further information about the incident was available.
