HOUSTON -- An 11-year-old boy was shot and killed while playing a doorbell prank with friends on Saturday night in southeast Houston, police said.

The shooting happened just after 11 p.m. on Saturday.

The Houston Police Department said that the 11-year-old and his friends were playing "ding-dong ditch" when they arrived at the home. Officials said that's when someone ran out with a gun and opened fire, hitting the child.

The child was taken to the hospital in critical condition and died from his injuries on Sunday.

Our sister station KTRK captured the moment someone in the home surrendered to officers on Saturday night after authorities used a bullhorn to urge the person out of the house with their hands up. HPD said one person was detained for questioning and then released.

Shortly before 6 a.m. on Sunday, KTRK also caught the moment officers brought a person in handcuffs back to the home where the shooting had happened.

On Sunday night, authorities said the suspect was detained again, but not formally charged.

An investigation is ongoing.
