Driver runs off after car goes airborne, crashes through window of Frankford home

PHILADELPHIA -- A car went airborne and then smashed through the window of a home after a crash in Philadelphia early Thursday morning.

It happened around 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of Oxford Avenue, Horrocks Street and Kenwyn Street.

According to police, the driver of a light-colored Toyota stopped at the stop sign, then started to continue westbound on Oxford Avenue.

That's when the driver of a dark-colored Honda blew through the stop sign and hit the Toyota.

The speeding Honda went airborne before crashing into the bay window of the Kerwyn Street home. As the car plunged in, the facade of the two-story home came crashing down onto it, leaving only the tail end of the car exposed.

The driver of that Honda then fled the scene on foot and remains at large. Philadelphia police say that the Honda was reported stolen in early September.

Inside the home was Cheri Clayton, her son and daughter, who have lived there for 12 years.

Cheri says she heard a loud crash, saw smoke, and ran outside with only the clothes on her back.

"I come down my steps, get out the door and I see the gentleman come down and walk down my block and down my driveway," she said. "I didn't know a car was through my window, I would not come and look at it. I just did not want to see a car through my window."

The driver of the Toyota, a 31-year-old man, is hospitalized in critical condition.

The Department of Licenses and Inspections has been notified of the structural damage to the home.
