'Fault,' directed by 'Seinfeld's' Jason Alexander, makes world premiere in Chicago

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The world premiere of "Fault" is a big hit at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, but there's only a week and a half left to see it.

Jason Alexander of "Seinfeld" fame is in the director's chair for the dark comedy with highly charged drama. He said this is the city he wanted for the show's debut.

In the show, a husband comes home to find his wife with a younger man. So, who's to blame for the faltering marriage, and must someone be wrong before they can make it right?

"It's about, as most dramas are, ego. 'I can't be wrong; I can't be the one at fault. It has to be the other person.' And what if it's not? Or what if you get to the point where you go, 'it's both of us.' If you don't trust, and you don't look and don't admit, can that relationship hold?" Alexander said.

He said being an actor is definitely different from directing.

"If I had to be an actor doing eight a week again, the legs aren't what they used to be. But from the director's chair, I get to be a part of it all. And it fits perfectly with what my life is, who I am, the kind of artistry I understand," Alexander said.

"Seinfeld" gave him the freedom to do what he wants.

"To have the opportunities that I've had, to work with the people I've been able to work with, to have been given the lifestyle that I could not have imagined because of one extraordinary thing that I've had in my career, having visibility, notoriety, having celebrity is not a small factor," Alexander said.

He said he loves the Chicago audience.

"The Chicago audiences, whether they know it or not, understand they are our collaborators. This is a new piece; it's never been done before. It's not perfected; we're still figuring it out," Alexander said. "When Chicago Shakes said, 'come do your new play here.' I said, 'yes, that's exactly where I want to be.'"

Alexander said he feels very lucky.

"This is all beyond my imagination and expectations, and I am very aware of the blessings in my life, including getting to this age and having a whole new door of producing, directing, all these other things I'm invited to do," he said. "None of it is lost on me. I've had a pretty smooth ride this lifetime; I don't know why."

Alexander says Chicago is a gorgeous city that "makes New York look silly."

"Fault" will play at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater until May 24.
