Quick Tip: Tax scams

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Here's a quick tax scam tip as tax season is underway.

The Better Business Bureau is warning taxpayers about a surge in scams designed to steal your money and your identity.

First, there are IRS imposters. Calls or messages claiming you owe back taxes or are owed a refund.

Remember, the Internal Revenue Service will never threaten arrest, demand immediate payment or ask for gift cards or wire transfers.

There are also phishing emails and texts that look official and push you to a malicious link.

Don't click on any strange texts to your phone. The IRS will reach out to you by mail if there is an issue.

Also, beware of "ghost" tax preparers, promising big or fast refunds, then disappearing when problems show up.

Always verify tax preparers through the IRS and the BBB websites.

Also file early to stop a scammer filing in your name to get your refund.
