Family loses Lake Villa home to large fire on New Year's Eve

LAKE VILLA, Ill. (WLS) -- A family is grappling with losing their north suburban home to a fire on New Year's Eve.

Ayo Tunde told ABC7 he and his family were at church on Wednesday evening to celebrate the new year when they got a message about a fire in their Lake Villa neighborhood.

Ayo used an app to access the camera on a car in his garage near Red Cedar Road and Pine Tree Drive.

Video from the scene captured crews fighting intense flames shooting through the roof.

"I could see the firefighters and stuff. I told the kids, yes, it's my house, so we rushed down," Ayo said. "That's how we got into the new year."

Ayo says he is grateful no one was hurt.

What caused the fire was not immediately clear.

A GoFundMe has been started to help the family.
