MAYWOOD, Ill. (WLS) -- A man who pleaded guilty to killing a 9-year-old suburban boy in 2023 will spend more than 15 years in prison.

Javier Murillo was sentenced Tuesday in the killing of Ulysses Campos at a family birthday party in Franklin Park.

Prosecutors said the shooting stemmed from an argument with Campos' father minutes earlier.

They said after the encounter, Murillo returned and fired shots at a group, hitting the young boy, who later died.

Murillo pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm. He was initially charged with first-degree murder.

Murillo did not have any previous felony convictions, and had recently moved back to Illinois from California.

He also worked for Metra, and had worked before the shooting.

Prosecutors said license plate readers and surveillance video from nearby businesses led police to the suspect, who until his arrest was living with his parents and brother in Melrose Park.
