2 hurt after train hits vehicle in north suburbs: fire officials

HAINESVILLE, Ill. (WLS) -- Metra Milwaukee District North service is affected after a train hit a vehicle in the north suburbs, the commuter rail said.

Greater Round Lake fire crews responded just after noon to a crash involving a train and a vehicle near the intersection of Belvidere Road and Centre Drive in Hainesville, which is near Grayslake.

One person was extricated from the vehicle, which had sustained major damage, fire officials said.

The person was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in critical condition, fire officials said. Another person remained stable, fire officials said.

Metra said the driver of the vehicle died in the crash.

Metra said on X just after 12:30 p.m. that outbound train No. 2113, scheduled to arrive in Fox Lake at 12:15 p.m. hit a vehicle near Grayslake.

Metra Milwaukee District North trains are not traveling between Grayslake and Fox Lake.

Metra police are investigating.
