Siblings charged with beating Chicago police officer over parking ticket

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago Police officer Kevin Mangan suffered serious injuries to his mouth and jaw after a brutal attack over a parking ticket.

Prosecutors accuse Michael Sopher and Monica Mejia of assaulting Officer Mangan and his partner Tuesday near 37th Street and Marshfield Avenue in McKinley Park.

The defendants are siblings and had been parked on that street near a scene where an ambulance and CPD squad car were parked.

There was apparently a dispute about the officers writing a ticket for the defendants allegedly blocking police vehicles, preventing them to leave.

Mejia allegedly yelled at the officer and repeatedly tapped on his window before getting into a physical altercation with Officer Mangan.

That's when Sopher allegedly stepped in and started punching the officer, threw him to the ground and used brass knuckles as he continued to punch him in the face.

The officer won't be able to work or eat solid food for months.

Officer Mangan's family say charges are the first step of justice being served.

A judge ordered defendants to remain behind bars until trial as prosecutors shared details of this brutal attack.

The woman accused of this attack has a history of convictions for assaulting police officers and Sopher is a registered sex offender.

Both are due back in court May 26.
