Ignoring railroad crossing lights in Illinois will now carry a heavier penalty.

Twenty four people died across the state last year because drivers ignored crossing signals.

Governor Bruce Rauner signed a new law that doubles the fine currently on the books.

Drivers caught crossing the tracks while the signal lights are on will face a $500 penalty. For each offense after that, the fine goes up to $1,000.
