CHICAGO (WLS) -- Federal prosecutors for the Eastern District of New York informed the court and defense attorneys for "El Mayo" on Tuesday that "the Attorney General has authorized and directed this Office not to seek the death penalty against the defendant Ismael Zambada Garcia."
Zambada Garcia was one of the world's most wanted drug fugitives until he was arrested last year in a bizarre and mysterious situation after he was brought to the U.S. in a private plane by one of El Chapo's sons.
Zambada Garcia faces kidnapping, torture and murder charges. He is accused of being one of the founding leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel.
