Stephen Curry documentary 'Portrait of an Artist' drops first trailer, shot exclusively for IMAX

When you get to Stephen Curry's level of basketball, it transforms from a game into an art form.

ESPN Films' latest documentary, "Portrait of An Artist: Stephen Curry," just released its first look at the film celebrating his record-smashing career. Following Curry's passion for the sport from when he was little, the documentary culminates on the legendary March 13, 2025 game between the Golden State Warriors and the Sacramento Kings where he became the first player to ever shoot 4000 3-pointers.

"I've been around basketball my whole life," Curry says in the trailer. "But the more I play, the more I start to see it differently."

Featuring home videos from when Curry was a baby, the movie follows him through his early basketball career and into the spotlight. And, through the lenses of 21 IMAX cameras, it will show the fateful night he made history.

"For me it's never just been a game," Curry says. "It's always felt more like an art."

And who better to help paint the portrait than fellow artists? Viola Davis, Rick Rubin, Patti Smith, Jon Batiste and more visionary voices are set to appear. Giving perspectives from across the fields of acting, music and more, they explore how audiences are drawn to the greats throughout history, including on the basketball court.

"Your purpose is not what you do," Viola Davis can be heard saying in the trailer. "It's what happens to people when you do what you do."

Meshing the worlds of the arts and sports, the new documentary aims to shine a light on a one-of-a-kind athlete in a one-of-a-kind way.

"There's a rhythm to it," Curry says. "This is what I was meant to do."
