Quick Tip: Vacation scams

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Here's a quick vacation scam tip.

As travel heats up, the Better Business Bureau is warning about a spike in vacation rip-offs that can cost you thousands.

Crooks are using fake rentals, phony booking sites and even so called "free" trips loaded with hidden fees.

The Federal Trade Commission says travel scams racked up more than $140 million in losses last year.

When booking, slow down. Scammers create urgency to get your money fast.

Pay with a credit card. Avoid wire transfers or prepaid cards they're nearly impossible to recover if you're scammed.

The BBB also says you should protect your personal data in rental cars. You may want to avoid syncing your phone or delete your info before returning the car.
