DOLTON, Ill. (WLS) -- An emotional city council meeting got underway in south suburban Dolton on Monday night as supporters of a mourning family demanded answers.

The mother of Khapri Alston denounced Dolton police and municipal leaders in the aftermath of his May 21 killing outside of a local establishment in the 14100-block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Alston was a father of two and a retired professional basketball player.

A person was arrested in connection with the shooting but was eventually released without charges. Several people at Monday night's meeting alleged that person is a powerful figure in Dolton.

Alston father became very emotional, saying "process is painful," and that all he can see is his son lying on the ground.

The killing has sparked outrage in a village that has known controversy. Former Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard showed up after the meeting, demanding answers.

"Remember when it was me, for any little thing, I got broadcast all over the news, but now that this tragedy happened in Dolton, no one is talking about it. Like, it is getting swept under the rug," Henyard said.

Other supporters say the case illustrates police shortcomings in Dolton and that the state should do an independent investigation of what happened to Alston.

"They are incompetent they are corrupt, and there needs to be a formal investigation into Dolton PD," said Dolton resident Trina Downs.

"Elected officials are the ones you hold accountable. Hold them accountable. Make them give you answers for a senseless situation that did not have to happen," Henyard said.

The Cook County State's Attorney's Office issued a statement, saying, "The CCSAO has not been contacted by law enforcement to review this case for criminal charges. As in every case, prosecutors must evaluate all of the available evidence and consider the applicable laws to determine whether we can meet the legal standard for bringing criminal charges. We remain open to reviewing any information that is brought to us by law enforcement."
