Union Pacific freight train derails in Dolton, officials say

DOLTON, Ill. (WLS) -- A freight train derailed in the south suburbs Thursday morning.

The train derailment occurred around 6:45 a.m. in the area of 141st Street and Western Avenue in Dolton near Posen, officials said.

Chopper 7 flew above the scene and showed several cars off the rails.

Union Pacific confirmed the derailment, saying seven rail cars went off the tracks.

No injuries were reported and nothing was spilled, officials said. Cleanup continued Thursday evening.

The cause of the derailment was not yet known as an investigation continues, Union Pacific said.
