University president Paul Alivisatos blames changes in federal policy since President Donald Trump took office

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Layoffs and budget cuts are coming to the University of Chicago.
University president Paul Alivisatos blames changes in federal policy since President Donald Trump took office and the fact that university income falls short of expenses.
The school plans to reduce expenses by $100 million.
UChicago will eventually reduce staff by some 400 employees, taking into account voluntary retirements and a hiring freeze last year.
Certain master's degree programs will be put on hold and there will be cuts to doctoral degree programs. There will be reductions in capital projects, too.
UChicago has substantially scaled down plans for the new Engineering and Science Building.
