CHICAGO (WLS) -- As many as three million Americans have Type 1 diabetes, which carries the constant threat of deadly complications including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and amputation. On Sunday, Oct. 5, several events in Illinois are trying to help turn type one into "type none." JDRF and tens of thousands of adults and children are participating in the Ron Santo Walk to Cure Diabetes in memory of the Chicago Cubs player. The walks take place on the Chicago Lakefront, Libertyville, Palos Hills, Peoria, Warrenville and Schaumburg.
Eyewitness News reporter John Garcia participated in the latter walk, and he has a personal reason for it. One of his daughters has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. During our news Sunday morning, John spoke with former JDRF board member Brodie Bertrand, who has four children, two of whom are living with Type 1 diabetes.
