CHICAGO (WLS) -- Illinois State Police troopers shot two suspects at West 77th Street and South Vincennes Avenue in Chicago's West Chatham neighborhood Thursday evening, Master Sgt. Jason Bradley confirmed.
Chicago fire officials said one person was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious to critical condition, while another was taken to St. Bernard Hospital in fair to serious condition. Illinois state police said both suspects' conditions have been stabilized.
A state trooper was also taken to Northwestern Hospital in good condition, fire officials said. State police said the trooper was not shot.
Illinois State Police said troopers conducting a traffic stop at that intersection were flagged down by the driver of a taxi. ISP said that when the troopers approached the cab, they encountered an armed subject in the backseat and shots were fired.
Police said troopers fired three shots. Witnesses said they saw them trying to pull at least one person from the cab before firing shots.
"I just know it was somebody in the back seat they were trying to pull through that window. And then I heard the shots as I'm approaching. Then I pulled over, right by that tree," said witness Denise Sanders.
State police said one gun was recovered from the scene. An investigation is ongoing.
