Yogis Unite Chicago to Raise $108,000 for Nepal Earthquake Victims
Chicago area social entrepreneurs, Luke Jensen, Maria Miles and Natasha
Casanova, have partnered with various local businesses and nonprofits to
present Yogis Unite Chicago for Nepal, a day of yoga, reflection, remembrance
and gathering in support of the earthquake victims in Nepal. Hundreds of yogis,
fair traders, Nepali-Americans and socially-conscious citizens will converge in the
heart of Chicago at Block Thirty-Seven, located on 108 N. State St., to raise
funds for Nepal on Saturday, May 30, 2015 from 10am to 9pm.
Chicago's top yoga studios will present group yoga classes in various styles for
all levels throughout the day starting at 10am. The day of practice and reflection
will conclude with a vigorous collective yoga session, followed by a guided group
meditation and a reception open to the hundreds of attendees from the entire
day. The UNITE gathering reception will feature Nepalese cuisine from Cumin,
additional food samples, beverages, silent auction and live music by DJ Taz
Rashid. The reception will honour the achievements of the day and the month
long fundraising efforts toward the ambitious $108,000 goal.
This event is the first of its kind, bringing Chicago's Yoga Community together
around one shared cause. Nepal is special to yogis, as it is the birthplace of the
Buddha and the land where yogic practice developed. Moreover the historical
event will bring together Chicagoans from all walks of life to support the
devastated state of Nepal, one of world's poorest and most underdeveloped
countries, which has been hit with several massive earthquakes and aftershocks,
killing over 8,000 people and leaving over 500,000 homeless. The funds raised
will go to the "Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund," established by a coalition of
primarily Nepali-American Chicagoland social organizations immediately after the
first earthquake on April 25 using the 501(c)3 tax-exempt status of the
Chicagoland Nepali Friendship Society. All donations made are tax-deductible. The fund will be used to provide humanitarian aid for the most affected people and regions.
