Thieves targeted an ULTA Beauty store in Lincoln Park about two hours later, Chicago police said.
CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police are investigating two smash-and-grab burglaries that happened at North Side businesses early Sunday morning.
The first break-in happened at an ice cream shop in the Rogers Park neighborhood's 6600-block of North Clark Street just before 1:30 a.m.
Police said a man broke the glass door of the business before stealing cash and merchandise.
Surveillance cameras captured the ice cream shop burglary, and the owner said it is upsetting to see his employees impacted by the break-in.
The owner, who wanted to remain unnamed, told ABC7 in the four years he's had this ice cream parlor on Clark Street, this is the first time someone has broken inside. He said the suspect got away with hundreds of dollars from the cash register.
"It's sad. It's very sad," the owner said. "People is working hard, you know?"
It was business as usual later in the day Sunday at the Rogers Park ice cream shop, despite customers having to walk through a shattered door for most of the day.
"When I saw that the door was broken, I asked my sister, 'should we come in or not?' Because we don't feel safe," customer Laura Nunez said in Spanish.

The security video showed a man throwing an object through the glass door before walking off. He then returns while looking around before climbing through the shattered entrance. Once inside, he could be seen hopping over the counter, heading straight to the cash register before prying it open, stealing more than $500 in cash.
Employees spent the day cleaning up broken glass, with the brick apparently used in the crime left on the floor. Also left with it are the concerns for the store's owner.
"I'm going to have to fight with the insurance, the owner said. "You know, it's very upsetting, very sad."
Plywood was later put up to cover the damage.
The owner told ABC7 over the phone he's determined not to let the break-in shutter his business and his store will stay open while the glass door gets fixed.
Police said the suspect ran away, and they're still searching for him.
