Break-in, attempted ATM theft caught on camera
Chicago police are warning of an increase in break-ins and ATM thefts.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A group of suspects attempted to use a pick-up truck to steal an ATM from a store on the South Side Friday morning, Chicago police said.

This is becoming a common trend and Chicago police are now warning businesses about.

Officers reported at least 20 similar break-ins on the South Side in the last couple of weeks.

Surveillance video shows three suspects using a chain to yank off the front door of K&A Food & Liquor store in the 2000-block of West Marquette Road at around 5:15 a.m.

It took the crew two tries to successfully pull it off.

The owner said, the suspects also attached the chain to the ATM. but couldn't remove it. so they had to leave, before police showed up.

In this video, a red pickup truck is seen taking of and less than a minute later, police showed up to the store with guns drawn.

About 10 minutes after that, it appears a similar crew broke into the Meijer's Gas Station in the 9200-block of Western Avenue near Evergreen Park, just miles down the road.

The doors to that gas station were also pulled off, using chains and the ATM was stolen, Evergreen Park police said.

A red pickup truck was used in that incident as well.

Businesses owners are growing more and more frustrated, acknowledging police are doing the best they can to catch these criminals.

"We are very thankful to the Chicago police District 7," owner Bhart Savlia said. "They quickly responded within three minutes they were here and did their job and we're grateful to them."

The owner of the business on Marquette Road said this will cost them nearly $7,000 worth of damage. At this point, no one is in custody for these burglaries.
