CHICAGO (WLS) -- An anniversary celebration was held Saturday to mark one year of The 606 Bloomingdale Trail on the North Side.
Music, food and games were featured at the event. Saturday's events aimed to celebrate a milestone, but organizers hoped to bring out people who may not have used the popular biking, walking and running so they could see what it's all about.
"It's really nice," said Kelly Perry. "We've been walking for at least three miles so far today."
The 606 was built on an old, elevated train line, which links Logan Square, Humboldt Park, Bucktown and Wicker Park.
"This trail comes out of a desire from the neighborhood too to have access to open space, to have a trail connecting these communities," said Jamie Simone, of the Trust for Public Land.
The 606 offers a nice view from above, but celebrations also took place below.
Those that frequent The 606 love what it has to offer.
"It's nice," said Beto Jimenez, who frequently uses the trail. "It's the first year and it's beautiful. Hopefully, a lot of people come in the summer out and enjoy it because it is a good trail."
And there is more to come. More parks will be built in the future, more art will be added, along with more interactive programming -- all making The 606 a unique urban green space.
"You can see that this area was needing parks because it's been so loved by the community," Simone said.
