Chicago skyline turns teal in support of ovarian cancer awareness

CHICAGO (WLS) -- September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, so the City of Chicago is planning to turn the city teal in support. Starting Sept. 14, the Chicago skyline will light up in teal to raise awareness and promote early detection of ovarian cancer. Chicago will be the largest city in the United States to go teal for the cause.

Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cancer cause of death for adult women. This year, approximately 22,000 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with the disease and 15,000 women will die. Only 19 percent of ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed at an early stage.

Symptoms of ovarian cancer include bloating, constipation, pelvic pain, back pain, abnormal bleeding and fatigue. It's best to see your doctor regularly to detect the disease early, and vastly improve chances for survival.

The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition is hosting a Teal Lights Cruise on Sept. 18 to get the best views of Chicago's landmarks when they turn teal for the cause. Tickets are $60 per person.
