Man gets 30 days in jail for swearing at Cook County judge

CHICAGO -- A Chicago man faces 30 days in jail after swearing at a Cook County judge during his bond hearing Sunday afternoon.

Alex Bailey, 31, of the 300 block of West Evergreen Street, had just been ordered held in lieu of $50,000 bail in a retail theft case when he began swearing at Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas.

He was being escorted from the courtroom when he started shouting and called Chiampas a "b - - - -."

Chiampas said she could charge him with criminal contempt of court and sentence him up to six months in jail. Bailey returned to the courtroom about an hour later to apologize to the judge.

"I feel very embarrassed," he said. "Sorry to the people and their families for being so disrespectful."

Chiampas thanked Bailey and sentenced him to 30 days in the Cook County jail.

Bailey was initially charged with stealing $366.97 in alcohol from a Jewel at 1340 W. Canal St., according to court documents.
