As this winter lingers on, many of us are stuck indoors. But you can make staying indoors more appealing by creating special spaces. One idea is to make your bedroom cozier and your bed more comfortable. It's a trend that's catching on in homes and in hotels all over the country that offer "Heavenly Beds." You can do it yourself with a little help from a suburban company that kicked off the trend. United Feather & Down is a luxury-bedding manufacturer headquartered in Des Plaines where they make pillows, comforters, featherbeds, blankets and specialty bedding products. The company traces its roots back to Europe in 1797 and it is still family-owned. United Feather & Down manufactures bedding for many of the larger hotel chains and pioneered the "Heavenly Bed" for the Westin chain.

Re-creating the luxury-hotel sleep experience at home is very easy, says Bob Hickman, Senior Vice President Sales and Marketing, United Feather & Down. The secret to improved sleep comfort is understanding the features and benefits products have to offer before you buy, he says.

  • Down and feather bedding ? many people believe they are allergic to feather and down, not true, Freshness Assured feather and down is hypoallergenic
  • Down alternative bedding -- look for products that closely mimic the characteristics of high quality down bedding
  • Products you'll need to look for:
    • Mattress pad
    • Pillows
    • Comforter, duvet insert, and/or blanket

The company's signature down and down-alternatives are sold through retailers such as Pottery Barn, The Company Store, Bloomingdale's and Bed, Bath and Beyond. Lyocell Down, Insuloft Down and MicroMax brand products recently were awarded "Best Buy" status in the February 2008 issue of Consumers Digest magazine

United Feather and Down has an outlet store open to the public located at their factory at 414 E. Golf Road in Des Plaines. The outlet store is open Monday ? Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM. The company also holds a yearly tent sale where they sell merchandise at deep discounts.
