REVIEW: 'Angels and Demons'

Rated: PG-13 (Sequences of violence, disturbing images and thematic material.)

This is a second adventure for Tom Hanks' Robert Langdon with director Ron Howard once again at the helm.

When the Vatican is threatened by what appears to be an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati, Robert Langdon is called in to investigate and hopefully save not only the Vatican, but perhaps the very existence of the Catholic Church itself.

Helping him find a bomb hidden somewhere in Rome is Italian Scientist Vittoria Vetra. The pair race to stop the Illuminati threat as well as save the Cardinals who are marked for death just before the bomb explodes.

I never actually saw "The DaVinci Code", as I read enough bad press about the film, that it I just ignored it when it released back in 2006. I've never even skimmed through the Dan Brown novels, so I have zero history with the material.

That said, I found "Angels and Demons"  to be rather interesting with its plot twists and treasure hunt moments, but for whatever reason, I didn't fully get into the adventure.

Tom Hanks does a good job delivering a believable threat and urgency. I even liked how the plot developed, although too much of it I thought was predictable.

I can only imagine what the book would be like so in hindsight I wish I had read the source material first.

"Angels and Demons" is a decent movie, but is not the summer blockbuster that I expected. I'm sure fans of "The DaVinci Code" will enjoy, but it gets a mere "shrug" from myself.

2 and a half buckets.
