New restrictions for telemarketing calls

September 2, 2009 Telemarketers now need written permission from consumers before they can call using automated, pre-recorded messages or so-called robocalls.

The new rules by the federal trade commission also cover consumers who are not listed on the federal 'do not call' registry. The new guidelines do not restrict live telemarketing calls unless the consumer is on the 'do not call' list.

Last December, the FTC also began requiring telemarketers to tell consumers how to avoid receiving future phone solicitations when they call.
