Hughes Sr. died in the summer of 2006, while his grandson with the same name fought in Iraq. Hughes III is a 1999 Waite High School graduate and a devoted soldier. With two tours in Iraq under his belt, he is scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan next year.
Both men, as well as countless other veterans, were on the mind of Hughes Jr. and fellow observers at a Memorial Day ceremony this morning at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
Cemetery ceremonies were held all over northwest Ohio today, including Sylvania and Perrysburg, as family, friends, and strangers paid their respects to fallen heroes and those who are still deployed.
