Newly discovered evidence could have the city council changing the city's historical record. A historian found the first female police officer was hired nearly 25 years prior to when women were thought to have joined the department.

Records show Marie Owens joined the force in 1891 as a detective sergeant. That makes her not only the first female officer in Chicago, but in the nation as well.
