Chicago police are investigating the theft of 20 of the city's pay-and-display parking boxes.

The rash of thefts began about four weeks ago.

Nearly half of the thefts have occurred in the Area Five police district on the city's Northwest Side.

About 3,000 parking boxes have been installed throughout the city to replace individual meters. Each parking box weighs about 200 pounds. Drivers across the city have complained about high parking fees at the boxes.

Many were targeted by vandals before the thefts started.
