A small-business owner in Florida chose to fire herself instead of laying off her employees.

Lola Gonzalez owns a company providing background checks for employers. She has just nine employees. But the economy forced Gonzalez to trim the payroll.

Gonzalez told each one how much she appreciated them. And she couldn't bear to let them go. So she decided to cut her own job.

She still owns the company but will use her former manager's salary to keep all nine workers employed.
