The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the L.A. Tan on 94th Avenue in Orland Park.
Police say the alleged robber entered the tanning salon and pointed a handgun at a female employee. He allegedly ordered her to tie up a woman who was using a tanning bed. Minutes later, a male customer entered the business. The robber reportedly pointed the gun at him, but the man grabbed the gun away and then shot the would-be robber to death.
The dead man has not been identified.
The customer has not been charged.
