Twenty-year-old Joseph Conrad faces charges including attempted murder, aggravated battery and obstructing justice.
Police say Conrad beat his mother, 43-year-old Kathleen Conrad, in her Joliet home on Monday. Investigators say he then called police and told them his mother had been attacked by an intruder.
Conrad's mother survived and had surgery to relieve swelling on her brain.
