Alvarez filed her motion yesterday to support a lawsuit brought by 25 couples against Cook County David Orr.
Orr himself filed a response agreeing with its premise of the suit: that it discriminates against same-sex couples who apply for a marriage license.
"We passed the civil union law a year ago," Quinn said. "That's worked out very well in Illinois. As this lawsuit begins, we'll see how that goes through the courts."
Critics of same-sex marriage say Alvarez's motion does not reflect the will of Illinois voters.
