Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson announced the updated version of the Dollar Home Program, which was used successfully in the 1980s and '90s.
The city of Gary will offer 13 houses for sale for $1. Freeman-Wilson said she hopes will help residents want to stay in the city.
The Post-Tribune reports all of the houses featured in the dollar home program are owned by the city and located in the University Park neighborhood.
Freeman-Wilson says she bought a $1 home 25 years ago through a Department of Housing and Urban Development program while she was working as a deputy prosecutor. She says the purchase had an "overwhelming impact" on her life and desire to contribute to the city.
Freeman-Wilson pledged to revive the program during her 2011 campaign. About 25 percent of Gary's homes are abandoned.
